The holidays can feel like a lot. Schedules, expectations, and the endless to-do lists. That’s exactly why I created The Holiday Reset, a simple three-step routine that helps me feel more energized and intentional during this busy season.

It started as a twist on my Feel-Better Trifecta — a little routine I built after being in a rut for awhile — and it’s now something I rely on every single morning this time of year. It’s a simple real-life routine that helps me start the day feeling motivated to make better choices throughout the day.
If you’ve been struggling to stay on course during the holiday chaos, these three steps might help.
Step 1: The Black Coffee Moment (or Your Version of It)
This one sounds tiny… because it is. But it matters.
For me, choosing black coffee instead of loading it up with the usual sugary creamer became a daily reminder that I can keep a promise to myself. Once I made that choice, I wanted to continue to make better choices throughout the day.
Your “black coffee moment” can be anything:
- a full glass of water
- your favorite mug
- stepping outside for 30 seconds
- lighting a candle
- making your bed
It’s just one simple act that says:
“I’m starting today with purpose.”
Step 2: Move Your Body (Even for Five Minutes)
After my foot surgery, movement felt impossible. Then it felt scary. Then it became the one thing that changed my entire mindset.
I started with “hurt foot workouts” on YouTube — short, creative videos that helped me move safely. Five minutes mattered. Honestly, two minutes mattered.
Now, movement is simply part of my reset:
- a short Pilates workout
- a walk around the house
- stretching
- deep breaths
- treadmill + audiobook
It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to happen. And during a season that demands so much from us, those five minutes are often the only time we do something for ourselves. I feel so much better when I make sure to build that into the day. And preparing some healthy meals and snacks for the week ahead of time holds me accountable. Read more about that in the post, Healthy Eating When You Don’t Like Cooking.
Step 3: Fuel Your Mind
During recovery, I picked up Mel Robbins’ The Let Them Theory — and it opened my eyes and mind in a way I had no idea was possible. It gave me the push I needed to finally start this blog and stop worrying about what other people might think. Once I read this book, it made me want to read or listen to something each day that could inspire me just a little.
This step is about finding what lifts you:
- a podcast
- a chapter of a book
- a favorite playlist
- a motivational quote
- a few minutes outside
When you start your day with something that fills you — even briefly — everything else gets a little easier.
Why This Reset Works (Especially During The Holidays)
None of these steps take long. All three together might add up to ten minutes on a busy day. But they do three things that matter:
- they give your mind a place to land
- they give your body a gentle boost
- they remind you that you matter too
When you take care of yourself first — even just a little — you show up better for everyone else. You feel more patient, more present, and more able to enjoy the moments you want to remember.
And that’s what most of us want right now anyway.
