When Loss Leads to Purpose

I never imagined that grief would be the doorway to finding your purpose after loss. Losing my mom and our sweet Labrador, Molly, within three weeks of each other… Well, it felt unfair. My boys left for college shortly after. The world kept moving, but I didn’t. Everything felt too quiet in a way that changes you.

I found myself sitting with a question I didn’t expect:
Who am I now, and what do I do with this pain?

What surprised me was that the answer didn’t arrive as a lightbulb moment.
It arrived as a pen, a blank page, and an urge to get my feelings out on paper.

How Writing Became the First Step Back to Myself

I started writing because I didn’t know what else to do. I found myself feeling better when putting my experiences and feelings down on paper or computer screen in front of me.

And then I had a thought:
What if this wasn’t just therapy… what if this was a beginning?

So I did something that scared me in an exciting way:
I enrolled in a blogging course.
I needed something of my own — a project, a purpose, a reason to look forward again.

That one decision changed everything.

From Grief to Growth: How My Blog Became “My Thing”

What started as a space for grief slowly turned into something much bigger — a place for growth, creativity, connection, and joy. My Why became honoring my mom and Molly by sharing my experiences, thoughts and small joys. They brought so much joy to my life, why not share it with others?

Now? My blog is the thing that gets me out of bed with excitement.
It’s the project I built with my own hands and heart.
And over time, I’ve realized it’s more than a hobby… it’s my purpose.

It’s my “thing.”
And someday, I believe it will help support my family too — which makes it even more meaningful.

If You’re Wondering What Comes Next…

Maybe you’re here because something in your life has changed.
Maybe your house is quieter, your routine feels empty, your job doesn’t fulfill you, or you lost a loved one.

Maybe you feel like something’s missing, but you can’t quite name it.

If that’s you — believe me when I say:

It’s not too late to find your thing.

Your next chapter.
Your “I still have something inside me” moment.

My next chapter showed up in a blank page and a courageous little click to enroll in a course.
Yours might be:

  • in a garden
  • in a long walk
  • in a camera lens
  • in a podcast mic
  • in a recipe you love
  • in a small business idea that’s been nudging at you

If you’re reading this and you feel that nudge to try something you thought might never be possible, give it a shot. You might discover something that changes your life.

So How Do You Start?

Start small.
Start quietly.
Start without telling anyone.
Start before you feel ready.

Here are three ways to begin:

✔ 1. Follow the tiny spark.

What feels interesting, comforting, or energizing right now?
Follow that.

✔ 2. Make space for yourself.

Set aside 10 minutes for your own thoughts, your own creativity, your own joy. My Free Holiday Reset may help you take those minutes for yourself.

✔ 3. Let your grief guide you — not swallow you.

Sometimes the thing you’ve lost points you toward the thing you’re meant to build next.

Your Future Self Will Thank You for Starting

If you’re sitting in your own quiet moment, wondering what comes next…

Start looking. It’s not selfish.

✨ It’s your next chapter calling.
✨ It’s allowed to be joyful.

Your purpose might begin as surprisingly as mine did — born from loss and sadness, and slowly becoming a way to inspire and share joy again.
