How to Get Your Motivation Back in Midlife When You Feel Stuck

I have spent a good part of my life waiting to feel ready. Ready to clean the closet, ready to start the new job, ready to speak up in a room full of people. If you are waiting for motivation in midlife to show up before you begin, I want to tell you what I have learned. The feeling usually comes after you start.

I used to think motivation came first

Every big task on my list used to get the same treatment from me. Cleaning out a closet or the whole house felt like too much, so I waited for a day when I felt like doing it. That day almost never arrived on its own.

What changed my mind was noticing what happens once I actually begin. Ten minutes into the closet, I am in a groove. A half hour in, I am wondering why I put it off for so long.

What the first hour of a new job taught me

Starting a new job recently brought up every doubt I have. I worried I would not be ready and that I would not be good enough.

Then I went in and got through the first hour. After that hour I realized I was capable. Doing the work well gave me a little positive reinforcement, and that fueled the next hour and the one after that. Starting was what kept me going.

You may be more ready than you think

I have had stage fright in many parts of my life, from speaking in front of people to singing. Singing is a little secret love of mine, and I have wanted to do something with it since I was a little girl. For now I sing in the car, in the shower and anywhere else I can.

When I look back at all those moments of waiting to feel ready, I see something I did not expect. I was always ready. I just did not know how to start. Once I did, I was okay, and then okay turned into really great.

Why waiting for motivation in midlife keeps you stuck

Waiting feels responsible, like you are preparing. In reality, the feeling of readiness rarely arrives until you are already in motion. Action creates the confidence, which really means the opposite of what we thought.

Try one small promise today

You do not need a big plan. Pick one of these and give it ten minutes:

  • Open the closet and clear one shelf.
  • Walk to the end of your street and back.
  • Sing one song out loud, even if only the dog hears it.
  • Open the document you have been avoiding and write one sentence.

When ten minutes is up, you are allowed to stop. Most of the time you will not want to.

Start with a short, realistic list

If ten minutes still feels like too much, try writing a list instead. Jot down three things you would like to get done in the next couple of days. You do not have to do any of them today, because putting them on paper is already a step forward.

The important part is keeping each one realistic. In my own experience, when a goal is too big, I avoid it. A one-hour walk can feel hard to fit into my day, but a 20-minute walk is doable, so I actually go. Sometimes I enjoy it so much that the 20 minutes turns into 30.

Choose goals you can picture fitting into an ordinary day. A small goal you finish builds more momentum than a big one you keep putting off.

If you want a little company while you start

I put together a free 3-day email challenge for this exact moment, when you want to feel like yourself again but need a gentle push. Each day is one small step, and it is a good way to see for yourself how starting changes the way you feel. You can join 3 Days to Feel Like Yourself Again here.

3 Days To Feel Like Yourself Again

Some days get away from you before you even notice. That isn’t a flaw in you, it’s what happens when you’re carrying more than an ordinary day accounts for. For three days, I’ll send you one small thing to focus on, no to-do list, no overhaul, just one small win a day. By day three, you might feel like yourself again, and some days, maybe even a little more than that.
