Why Two Pieces of Pumpkin Pie with Whipped Cream Won’t Derail You

I’ve been on a mission lately—to feel good, make better choices, and take care of myself mentally and physically at 51. And let’s be honest, it’s not as effortless as it used to be. My metabolism now needs a little more motivation than it did in my 30s, and my body doesn’t exactly love a late-night sugar fest like it once did.
But here’s the thing: sometimes life requires a little rebellion.
So yes, I had the pumpkin pie. With whipped cream. And some red wine. Times two, while binge-watching Nobody Wants This on Saturday night. And you know what? I’m more than okay with it. I actually feel great.

Here’s what I’ve learned about finding a healthy balance after 50—one night of “living a little” doesn’t undo all your progress. What really does the damage is the guilt spiral that follows. That voice that whispers, you shouldn’t have. I’ve decided to stop listening to that voice.
The real self-care in midlife isn’t perfection—it’s permission.
It’s knowing that taking care of yourself includes room for joy, dessert, and a glass (or two) of wine while watching TV. Because balance isn’t about denying what you love; it’s about not losing your mind trying to be perfect.
If you struggle with guilt after indulging, try this:
- Reframe it. One meal doesn’t define your habits. Consistency does.
- Reset. Drink some water, move your body, and start fresh—no punishment required.
- Notice your self-talk. Swap “I blew it” for “I enjoyed it.”
- Remember the big picture. Health is built on joy, rest, and balance—not deprivation.
So this is your friendly midlife reminder: have the pumpkin pie. Skip the guilt.
Because feeling good is the goal—not being flawless.
